The Truth About Gout And Arthritis And What Really Causes It

Understanding Gout and Arthritis

Arthritis is a disease that causes painful stiffness and inflammation of the joints. In Filipino, it is also known as “rayuma.” Gout falls under the inflammatory arthritis category where uric acid forms in the joint causing pain.

Unmasking The Truth

A group of rheumatologist debunks this belief. One of them is Geraldine Zamora-Racaza. According to her,

Ang sagot diyan ay hindi. Hindi talaga siya bawal. Kawawa nga po ang munggo [dahil] parati siyang sinisisi. ‘Dok kumain ako ng munggo,’ and they automatically attribute na ‘yung munggo daw ang sanhi ng pagsakit ng kasu-kasuan. This is not true kahit gout pa ang rayuma.

Another rheumatologist, Ester Gonzales-Penserga, noted that Gout arthritis is caused by high uric acid which can be seen in high-purine foods. In contrast, monggo beans do not contain high-purine levels. She cited that

Siguro ‘yung munggo nila may dilis, maalat, may chicharon kaya siguro nagkaroon ng atake ng gout. Baka ganun at hindi dahil sa munggo per se. Baka may ibang nagawa, baka nakainom, o di kaya na-dehydrate kaya umatake ang gout.

The Real Culprit

Taking note that high-purine foods are the cause of Gout attack, here are some of the foods that we need to avoid:
– alcoholic drinks
– some fish, shellfish such as crab, lobster, oysters and shrimp, and seafood including sardines, anchovies, mussels, scallops
– some meats, such as beef, chicken, bacon, and organ meats like liver

They have added that “Kung pipili po ng isdang kakainin mas maganda po ‘yung mga tuna compared to dilis.”

Yung fructose corn syrup, nasa mga juice, desserts, ‘yung ‘yung usually na kinagugulat ng mga pasyente na sinasabihan kong ‘magandang umiwas sa mga ganitong pagkain or inumin dahil nakatataas din ng uric acid or high in purine.

Other Things To Consider:

Dr. Gonzales-Penserga clarified that another thing to consider is losing weight. She noted that 80% of uric acid comes from the body. She pointed that the higher the body fat, the higher the uric acid is.
Dr. Gonzales-Penserga added that the 20% comes from the uric acid of foods.

Lastly, they have noted that the only people who should avoid high purine foods are those with Gout arthritis.
